Center City Opera Theater – Apprentice & Studio Artist Programs 2010-2011
These programs are designed as educational experiences for young singers, pianists, and directors with one of the region’s most dynamic professional opera companies. Only the most talented singers will be selected, by audition, to participate in these programs. There will be a maximum of 14 singers, 1 pianist-coach, 1 stage director and 3 designers invited to be a part of the programs. Auditions and interviews for both programs will be held in September. The programs start in October. Please note, this program is based in Philadelphia and there is no travel reimbursements offered for either program. The Studio Artist Program does pay a weekly stipend to selected artists.
Apprentice Artist Program 2010-2011
The CCOT Apprentice Artist Program is designed as post-graduate educational training program for the area’s young singers, pianists, and directors. Participants are selected, by audition, to participate. This program is meant to give practical professional experience for young singers, coaches and directors, covering every aspect required of a professional: resume preparation; website preparation; auditioning; acting and stage movement; legal counsel and contracts; vocal production via coaching; role preparation, etc, all culminating with live performance opportunities, including an annual production. All will participate in various outreach events during the year. Other opportunities will be possible in our ConNEXTions new opera workshop productions. All apprentice singers will cover and perform roles in CCOT 2010-11 main stage season, in addition to any chorus assignments. Generally there are two apprentice sessions each month, in addition to performance activities. Accepted singers must commit to attending all scheduled sessions and performance assignments. Apprentice artists are not charged any fees for participation or coachings; nor do they receive any financial compensation as part of their participation. A maximum of nine singers will be selected for this program – five women and four men.
Studio Artist Program 2010-2011
This program is meant to give professional experience for emerging artists who have participated in one of the major apprentice program offered by other opera companies, or have already participated in Center City Opera Theater’s Apprentice Artist program. Singers in this program will be expected to be at a high level of career preparedness. Studio artists will be invited to participate in training and coaching sessions, but they will play an integral part of our main stage productions and educational outreach projects during the 2010-2011 year, giving them major roles experience in front of audiences. Other performance opportunities will be within our ConNEXTions workshop productions, as singers will participate in the ongoing creation of the four current CCOT commissioning projects. A maximum of one soprano, one mezzo-soprano, one tenor, one baritone and one bass-baritone will be selected for this program. Additionally, there are openings for a studio stage director, studio coach, studio scenic designer and studio lighting designer. These artists will perform in CCOT’s 2010-11 main stage productions, which include the North American premiere of Rushton’s comic opera The Shops in November; Donizetti’s Don Pasquale in January, and Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte in March. Additional responsibilities assigned during the 12-13 weeks of this program related to outreach and workshops. Designers will be able to create and implement their concepts for these main stage productions. Studio artists are paid a weekly stipend and provided housing assistance. Accepted singers must commit to attending all scheduled sessions and performance assignments. This is meant to be a highly competitive and intense program.
All artists in both the Apprentice and Studio program will have the opportunity to work with and sing for regional and nationally recognized conductors, coaches and directors during their time in Philadelphia.
