My son/daughter is very mature for his/her age. How strict are you about the age/grade levels of your programs?
The Education Department has designed its programs with certain age groups and grade levels in mind in order to present them with the best opera experience possible. Many factors must be considered before age limits are set, some of which are beyond our control. While we realize that some children may be prepared for some programs earlier than others, we’ve found that it’s always best to stay within the established parameters for each program. Even seasoned adult opera lovers enjoy—and often learn from—our programs for students!
Where can I find a voice teacher for my child?
The most appropriate age to start private voice lessons for your child is 14 years. Due to the physical development of the vocal chords, it is not recommended for younger children. Prior to that, any type of group singing in a chorus or school musical is highly recommended. Piano or keyboard lessons at an early age are strongly encouraged to develop your child’s understanding of music in general. There are numerous community music schools in the Philadelphia area that offer voice lessons with highly qualified music instructors to teens and adults. Another resource is the local chapter for the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS). Listings can be found in the yellow pages.
